Challenge Cup Quiz: Can you get these 20 questions correct?

Challenge Cup quiz

The Challenge Cup is the oldest and most historic rugby league competition in the sport.

It was the 1896–97 season when the Challenge Cup started, with 125+ years since seeing the competition deliver some incredible moments, huge upsets and periods of domination for some clubs.

Prior to the summer era and the launch of Super League in 1996, alongside the rapid rise of the NRL in Australia, the Challenge Cup was often considered to be the pinnacle of the club game in rugby league.

It would see players travel from overseas and sign for British clubs just to have the opportunity to play in the competition and give themselves the chance of reaching the final at Wembley.

The 1985 season is a prime example of this, with Wigan and Hull FC signing Brett Kenny and Peter Sterling, two of the best Australian players in the game, with the pair then locking horns at Wembley in arguably the greatest final of the competition’s long and prestigious history.

That day saw an incredible final as Wigan prevailed 28-24 in front of a packed crowd at Wembley, with this one of many finals that stick in the memory. The ‘Watersplash Final’ of 1968 and the ultimate underdog story of 1998 when Sheffield toppled all-conquering Wigan are two other finals that rank highly.

The Challenge Cup is a competition that holds a special place in the hearts of most rugby league fans, so with this in mind and given its long history, as mentioned above, we want to test your knowledge with this 20-strong question quiz.
