Challenge Cup referee Chris Kendall at Wembley

The officiating teams for Saturday’s bumper RFL Challenge Cup finals day at Wembley have been announced.

Historically, it has been the RFL’s Men’s Super League officials taking the games, even though teams from the league aren’t present in every game.

Chris Kendall took last year’s Men’s Challenge Cup final between Hull KR and Leigh Leopards, and has also been referee for the 2019 and 2020 finals, touch judge and video referee for finals, and the referee for the first-ever 1895 Cup final in 2019.

Jack Smith took last year’s 1985 Cup final between Batley Bulldogs and Halifax Panthers. This year’s is between Sheffield Eagles and Wakefield Trinity in an all-Yorkshire affair, and won’t have video referees in attendance.

It was James Vella taking the first-ever Women’s Challenge Cup final at Wembley, and it’s another well-known referee in the middle this year as Leeds Rhinos take on the reigning champions St Helens.

For the 1895 Cup final, Tom Grant is to be the referee, making his first ever Wembley officiating appearance. There are no video referees in the RFL Championship or RFL League One, so these sides will be paying with no video referee here as well.
