Catalans Dragons’ 23-22 win over Huddersfield Giants on Friday night came at a price, it seems. The Dragons needed a response after losing to bottom of the table outfit London Broncos last weekend and they had enough to get the win at the John Smith’s Stadium as Arthur Mourgue’s 75th minute drop goal being the difference.
However, the Dragons saw Sam Tomkins limp out of the action in the 53rd minute of the game due to a hamstring injury. The full-back was making his third appearance for the club since coming out of retirement last month.
Tomkins could be seen receiving treatment on the pitch before leaving the action to be replaced by Theo Fages. Sky Sports confirmed the issue was a hamstring problem, with the 35-year-old failing to return to the field.
The extent of the injury is yet to be revealed, but it remains to be seen if the former England international will be fit enough to take on Hull KR at Elland Road next week.
Catalans Dragons started the game well in Huddersfield, running out into a 10-0 lead as Bayley Sironen and Tomkins got over the line. Fouad Yaha hammered home the French side’s dominance in West Yorkshire, as he touched down in the 21st minutes.
Huddersfield hit back through Jake Bibby and Kevin Naiqama made it a contest as he touched down just before the break.
Arthur Romano’s effort saw Catalans gain an eight point advantage prior to Tomkins’ injury and Matt Ikuvalu put the Dragons into a controlling position going into the final 17 minutes. Sam Hewitt and Tui Lolohea efforts ensured Steve McNamara’s side needed Mourgue to do the business with the boot to claim the two points.
Catalans Dragons now sit six points clear of seventh placed Leeds Rhinos, who play Wigan Warriors at Headingley on Saturday.
