Catalans Dragons make huge NRL signing hours after sacking three players

Catalonia flags and Catalans Dragons flags, and lots of fans and ticker tape at Stade Gilbert Britus for a Super League match.

Catalans Dragons have announced the much-reported signing of NRL star Luke Keary with the playmaker signing a two-year deal at the club.

The news comes just hours after they announced that they had terminated the contracts of three other players, two of which were overseas stars as well.

Catalans Dragons confirmed the news via a statement on their website.

It read: “The Dragons have just made official the signing of Luke Keary from the 2025 season.

“The 32-year-old Australian playmaker, who currently plays for the Sydney Roosters, has signed with the Dragons for two seasons.”

The arrival of Luke Keary had been reported initially by Rugby League Live but traction then quickly built including from down under and that reached a crescendo with news this week confirming that Keary had U-turned on his retirement decision.

Those reports came from Danny Weidler for 9News as he reported that the 32-year-old would be signing a two-year deal from 2025 with an announcement imminent. One day later and that announcement has been made.

It’s been a frantic day in Perpignan with Catalans Dragons confirming the news this morning that they had terminated the contracts of three of their players for what they described as an “unacceptable incident”.

They released a brief but decisive statement that read: “Following a disciplinary process, the Catalans Dragons have decided to terminate the contracts of three of their Players with immediate effect. The players concerned are Siua Taukeiaho, Jayden Nikorima and Damel Diakhate.

“All Players were involved in an incident deemed to be highly unacceptable by the Club and contrary to the Club’s values.”

It has since been reported in the French press that the reason for the termination of the trio’s contracts was due to their attendance at a concert whilst they had reported in sick from training.

They also failed to attend the France and England international in Toulouse, something that had been made mandatory attendance by bosses at the club given 13 Catalans players had been called up for the French national team.

Thankfully for fans of Les Dracs, this is much more positive news with 32-year-old Keary now set to become a mainstay in their spine over the next two years and bring a level of professionalism that has seen him become one of the NRL’s finest and most well-respected playmakers.
