Catalans Dragons hooker Micky McIlorum signs new one-year contract

Catalans Dragons hooker Micky McIlorum has signed a one-year contract with the club.

The England international, 34, has put pen to paper on a contract extension that will secure his future at the Gilbert Brutus Stadium until the end of the 2023 season.

Micky McIlorum played his entire professional career at Wigan where he won the 2010, 2013 and 2016 Super League titles and the Challenge Cup twice in 2011 and 2013 before signing for the Dragons.

Having arrived at Brutus in 2018, he was one of the key players of Steve McNamara’s men in the Challenge Cup success at Wembley.

He has also been very important in the last season’s run to the Grand Final at Old Trafford. His Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year awards won in 2018 and this season rewarded his great performances and his consistency so far with the club.

The English hooker has made 95 appearances for the Dragons and scored 8 tries.

Micky McIlorum has spoken of his desire to pick up trophies whilst in Perpignan: “I’m very happy to be playing on again next year with the dragons. It was an easy decision to stay and be a part of this group for another year as me and my partner Olivia love living here and see this as our home.

“The fans and people in this region have been very welcoming and kind to us since we arrived and we our thankful for that. I have enjoyed my time here over the past 5 years and it is pleasing to see the progression the club has made in the short time I have been here.

“I hope this continues next year and we are challenging to be in the finals which I feel we are more than capable of achieving this with the group we will have next year.

“Thank you to all the supporters who have supported the team and myself throughout my time here and we will be doing our best to bring some silverware back to Perpignan! Thanks to Bernard for his continued trust in me and the team as always.

Steve McNamara, Catalans Dragons headcoach waxed lyrical about the hooker: “Micky’s form this year has been exceptional resulting in him not only being awarded the players player of the year and the coaches player of the year but also a return into the England team for the World Cup.

“He is as fit and healthy as ever and we are delighted he will continue with us for another season.”
