Catalans Dragons beat Super League rivals to forward’s signature

Matt Whitley has made a massive decision on his future.

After being linked with a move away from the Stade Gilbert Brutus, the England Knights International has put pen to paper on a contract extension that will secure his future at the Gilbert Brutus Stadium until the end of the 2024 season.

The 26-year-old back-rower joined the club from the Widnes Vikings in 2019 and has already scored 28 tries in 71 appearances for the Dragons.

He quickly became a key player in the Catalans’ pack and played 13 games this season, scoring 4 tries with an average of 35 tackles par game.

The back-rower had been linked with a number of Super League sides as clubs battled for his signature, but Catalans have got their man.

Whitley cannot wait for the next few years at the Dragons: “I’m really excited to be staying at the Dragons and really looking forward to the next two years!”

Steve McNamara, the Catalans Dragons head coach, was over the moon with the new deal: “Matt has been a great addition to us since his arrival and he continues to grow and impress as a young man and a player. We are delighted he has agreed a new contract.”
