Following a heartbreaking Challenge Cup Final defeat to Wigan Warriors last weekend, Huddersfield Giants were challenged to get back on the horse in perhaps the most difficult place to go.
The West Yorkshire side made the trip to the south of France to take on Catalans Dragons with the French side enjoying a week off prior.
However, that week off seemed to do more harm than good as Huddersfield raced into an 18-0 lead.
Ricky Leutele – so often the man of the moment for the Giants in 2022 – crossed in the third minute, though Will Pryce couldn’t convert.
Pryce himself was returning for the first time in 11 games following a ten-match suspension for a dangerous throw earlier in the season, and he was in rampant mood, adding a penalty in the 12th minute to make it 6-0.
Things got worse for the Dragons when Adam O’Brien cantered over from 30 metres as Pryce again tagged on the extras.
Catalans were shellshocked and the Giants capitalised through Jack Cogger. Pryce converted to make it 18-0, before Sam Tomkins converted a penalty to reduce the deficit to 16 at the break.
Arthur Mourgue scored for the French side just after the break as Mathieu Laguerre registered another shortly after to make it 18-14.
However, Huddersfield held on and were even able to dot down again through Chris McQueen, though Pryce was wayward with the boot to leave the score at 22-14.
