Castleford Tigers welcome new signing to pre-season after missing the first week

The new era at Castleford kicked off officially last Monday when the Tigers began pre-season training under new coach Lee Radford.

The two-time Challenge Cup winner with Hull FC took charge of his first session as Castleford coach on the 8th November taking the reigns from now Warrington coach Daryl Powell who had been in the Tigers’ hot seat since 2013 overseeing Castleford’s best period in Super League history guiding them to three major finals.

It’s now up to Radford to continue that good work and he’s done so by drafting in some quality signings. He’s added strength in depth to the backs by calling upon former Hull FC duo Mahe Fonua and Bureta Faraimo as well as Warrington’s Jake Mamo who finished 2021 second in the try scoring charts.

In the halves he’s brought in former Leeds Rhino Callum McLelland who will provide competition at six and seven whilst in the pack the return of Joe Westerman is a major boost as is the signing of George Lawler on the back of an excellent season with Hull KR.

The England Knights international has developed wonderful at Craven Park becoming one of the best and most underrated middles in the league. He was a key figure in Hull KR’s sixth place finish as the Robins squeezed into the play-offs ahead of Castleford last season.

No doubt excited about the opportunities ahead of him at the Jungle and working with Radford, Lawler wasn’t present in the first week of pre-season most likely due to the birth of his daughter the day before pre-season was set to begin.

But the Tigers today confirmed he’d be joining the rest of the squad this week as they gear up towards what should be a huge year for the club.
