Castleford Tigers take former Hull FC man on trial

Nick Staveley in action for Hull FC

Castleford Tigers have announced the arrival of former Hull FC forward Nick Staveley on trial. Staveley was released by the Black and Whites earlier this week in order to pursue opportunities elsewhere after spending four years at the club.

The 21-year-old has now joined up with Castleford on trial and as he hunts for a permanent deal, he’ll hope to impress under the watchful eye of Danny McGuire. Staveley is from West Yorkshire and the switch represents a move closer to home.

The forward can play in most positions across the pack and he’ll be hoping to secure the opportunity to kick on and establish himself as a Super League player at Wheldon Road.

Staveley joined Hull’s set up from Warrington Wolves in 2021 and after working his way up the ranks he went on to make his debut for the club in 2023. He made eight appearances for the East Yorkshire outfit in total but his progress was stunted significantly last season after suffering an ACL injury.

He scored a Super League try against London Broncos last March and can count a further 13 games while on loan at Newcastle Thunder in the Championship as valuable experience, too.

Castleford aren’t blessed with a huge amount of depth in forward positions, despite the off-season signings of Jeremiah Simbiken and Dan Okoro, with the latter joining on loan from Warrington Wolves, and the club will keen to see Staveley kick on and earn a deal.

Interestingly, he’s a player director or rugby Danny Wilson knows well having worked with him during his days in charge of the Hull FC academy set up.
