Castleford Tigers surprised by their “unbelievable” fans

Castleford Tigers have made a number of new signings ahead of the 2023 season including plenty of young British players who could ensure the strength of the club moving forward.

One of them in Jacob Hookem made his debut against Featherstone Rovers on New Year’s Eve and the former Hull FC halfback was surprised by how good the Castleford fans were on a cold away trip on a festive occasion.

He said on Tigers’ TV:

“They were unbelievable today on New Year’s Eve I didn’t quite expect it but they were out in numbers today. I didn’t quite expect it to be as full as it was or as load as it was so I’m extremely grateful for the turn out in numbers.”

According to assistant coach Andy Last, Hookem should have plenty of chances to enjoy the Tigers fans as he promised he should have a real opportunity in 2023 despite the signing of Jacob Miller and Gareth Widdop from Wakefield Trinity and Warrington Wolves:

“He should have a real opportunity next season, he has come to us from Hull FC. I know Jacob well from my time there, he came and played some first grade games for them and he had an outstanding game at the end of last season against Wakefield.

“I was Wakefield assistant that night in 2021 and he was probably the best player on the pitch that night for Hull. He showed some nice touches that match.

“He’s a real competitor. He showed some nice touches. He probably played a bit erratic in that first half but I thought he controlled things really well in the second half. There is an opportunity there and what he did today will stand in him good going forward.”
