Castleford Tigers sign Super League forward with immediate effect

Castleford Tigers signing Matty English

Castleford Tigers have confirmed the signing of forward Matty English from Huddersfield Giants, on a two-week loan deal.

The loan is a rolling loan and he can be recalled anytime after the initial 14-day period.

Castleford have been in desperate need for an addition to their pack, due to both injuries and the poor quality of the forwards this season.

They currently sit in tenth place, only above Hull FC and London Broncos.

Despite this, the signing sees a second day in a row that the Tigers have made an important signing, after extending fullback Tex Hoy’s stay at the club yesterday.

English has featured ten times for the Giants this season, 4 of those from the bench. The 26-year-old has represented the England Knights side twice, once in 2019 and most recently in 2022.

He’s been at Huddersfield his entire career, making his debut in 2017 in the Challenge Cup against Swinton Lions, and has made over 100 appearances for them in total.

However, he last played in the Challenge Cup semi-final defeat to Warrington Wolves, struggling for game time in recent weeks.

Castleford Tigers Director of Rugby Operations, Danny Wilson, said: “Matty is a welcomed addition to strengthen our pack. His whole game is based on hard work and competitiveness and that is exactly what we want to complement our squad.”

Huddersfield Giants Managing Director, Richard Thewlis, said: “Matthew hasn’t played for around four weeks and is naturally keen for game time at the highest level as the reserve competition simply doesn’t provide what’s needed for a player of his quality.

“The opportunity for a couple of weeks at Castleford cropped up and given we’re currently relatively healthy in the prop area, this seems to be a win for all parties in the short term.

“Matthew will debut for them at the weekend. which will be his first ever club game outside of the Claret and Gold shirt .so it will be a great experience for him and one which I know he’ll relish alongside some of his former playing colleagues here.

“All parties will assess the situation after the initial 14 day loan period is up and the break for the international week is upon us.”

Matty English can make his debut on Friday night, as Castleford Tigers host Wigan Warriors at Wheldon Road at 8pm.
