Castleford Tigers have announced they have parted company with Danny McGuire with immediate effect.
McGuire spent just nine months in the head coach role at The Jungle, but the decision has been made to relieve the former Leeds Rhinos and Hull KR man of his duties. It comes following last Thursday’s 30-12 loss to fellow strugglers Huddersfield Giants in Super League which chairman Martin Jepson cited in his statement released by the club this evening.
McGuire leaves the Tigers sitting 10th in the table, six points off bottom but 10 points short of the play-off pace and with just 10 games remaining Castleford have little to no hope of gate-crashing the top six.
The 42-year-old claimed just four wins in the role, with his last win coming over Hull FC at the MKM Stadium released by the club.
A statement released by the club confirmed the decision, with director of rugby Chris Chester taking the reins on an interim basis until a permanent replacement can be found.
Castleford Tigers sack Danny McGuire
The statement read: “Following a board meeting today, Castleford Tigers can confirm the departure of Danny McGuire as head coach.
“Chairman Martin Jepson commented: “It has been a challenging season, but in particular, the result and performance in last week’s game against Huddersfield were hugely disappointing for me and everybody involved with the Club. The Board felt that a change of direction was therefore needed.
“”I would like to put on record my thanks to Danny for his hard work at the Club over the past two years, both as an Assistant and Head Coach, and I wish him well in the future.”
“Chris Chester will take over Head Coach duties on an interim basis with immediate effect.”
Unless a replacement can be found in the next few days, Chester will be the man in charge when Castleford travel to Salford Red Devils on Sunday. The Tigers will be favourites to pick up the points against the bottom of the table outfit before Warrington Wolves head to The Jungle next week.

Shows what you get with a set of numpties in charge. No money, no facilities & no quality players. Who would want to be the coach here……………….

The downhill slide began after the 2017 GF loss, with the then directors either unwilling or unable to provide the additional funds to push the squad forward. Then you have Radford’s ‘Dads Army’ recruitment which basically ruined all the good work Daryl Powell had achieved. Poor facilities and a struggling team aren’t going to attract decent players as witnessed by the disastrous overseas recruits over the last couple of years. The incentive to get out and watch the game in person has reduced due to every game shown live on TV, coupled with the cost of paying to watch a sub-standard team losing most weeks. Good luck to Martin Jepson and the new coach, I hope they can turn things around.

Well it looks like Leeds Rhinos might get a Steve McNamara & Danny McGuire should Brad Arthur leave at the end of the season.
Castleford need to re-build the squad. Too many players who should have been moved on or never signed.
Yes as a Rhinos supporter I was miffed we let go, Danny to start with. Looking in on Cas the whole thing needs a shake, ground, board (who should take a hard look at them selves) no team anywhere would get success with a roundabout management plan (maybe Dougal, some tell the snow flakes who that was). A team that lost leadership on the pitch. Trying to get a bargain buy with players who once played at a higher level. It’s a reason their called bargains.
I would have given, Danny at least 18 months. Let him try and rebuild.
I hope everyone looks at how much has been lost with getting rid of manager’s.
Which white Knight do the board think will come with player’s that aren’t playing and a board with a trigger finger like Leeds united old owner Massimo Celino?
