Castleford Tigers recruitment analysed ahead of Danny McGuire era

Castleford Tigers head coach Danny McGuire

Although their signings took a while to be confirmed, Castleford Tigers now have their recruitment in full flow.

In the space of just a few days, NRL half-back Daejarn Asi and PNG Hunters hooker Judah Rimbu have joined former Parramatta Eels man Zac Cini at Wheldon Road. Those recruits add to the previous deals confirmed in that Innes and Louis Senior become permanent arrivals at The Jungle.

Here’s some analysis on that new overseas trio – and how they might fit into the side.

Zac Cini

For a while, Cini was the only confirmed new signing for the Tigers next year.

He plugs a huge gap in the side, which was made glaringly obvious when Sam Wood was injured mid-season while on England duty.

The resurgent Alex Mellor actually won the club Player of the Year award for his performances filling in as a centre, but he’s primarily a second-rower, and Corey Hall has also since left the club.

Cini’s height may make him an ideal partner on the right-hand side for Jason Qareqare, who can be targetted in the air.

In addition, he played primarily at full-back this year, meaning he’s an option if Tex Hoy is ever unavailable. Cini can also play on the wing – making him a versatile and smart pick-up for the Tigers, despite not having a huge amount of first-grade experience.

He’ll surely be part of a good centre pairing with Sam Wood in 2025.

Few would have expected the Tigers to pick up a starting NRL half, but that’s what they’ve done with this signing.

Asi started 14 games for Parramatta Eels this season and was also a starter at the back end of the 2023 campaign – meaning he brings vast NRL experience to McGuire’s side.

Having also played at full-back and in the centres, he is capable of playing in other positions, but will likely only be used as a six or seven in his time with the Tigers.

Tall and creative, he brings something that is much needed to a side that has spent the past seasons with Jacob Miller as a first-choice half.

It’s likely that he’ll slot in right next to Rowan Milnes, with young Jenson Windley the man that can be brought on towards the end of the game.

Judah Rimbu

Yet another overseas signing, Rimbu’s signing will mean some interesting adjustments to the pack as a whole.

Just 23 years old, he has shown maturity beyond his years, being named as captain of his country for the first time against Australia PM’s XIII and with some impressive performances in their Pacific Championships victory.

He was also named Queensland Cup Player of the Year for 2024.

His signing will likely move Liam Horne to the 13 position, making Westerman an option as a prop to add some steel to the front row.

Cain Robb will likely remain the understudy in the number nine position for Castleford Tigers.
