Castleford Tigers’ NRL signing on likely position, goals and teammate he’s looking forward to playing with

Castleford Tigers’ NRL recruit Daejarn Asi has spoken on his preferred position, 2025 goals and who he’s most looking forward to playing with as the former Parramatta Eels man tells all after signing in Super League.

Asi was first linked with the Tigers in September but his deal was confirmed in late October, shortly after investor Martin Jepson acquired the controlling stakes at Castleford.

It was a whirlwind week at Wheldon Road with Craig Lingard replaced by Danny McGuire and then the Parramatta Eels man penning a two-year deal, before the Tigers then launched into pre-season.

Asi would arrive later in November and has now spoken on what can be expected of him as well as what he expects of himself in a Castleford Tigers shirt in 2025.

With 42 games of NRL experience and two caps for Samoa under his belt, the 24-year-old could inject plenty into an attack that has often failed to hit the mark in recent seasons. Under the tutelage of one of Super League’s finest ever playmakers, perhaps Cas have found the man to take them to the next level.

There was some uncertainty over what position Asi would play given his versatility but the revelation of the club’s shirt numbers and a recent interview look to have seen him confirm what his role is.

Asi was handed the number six shirt with the former NRL man set to partner Rowan Milnes in the halves. Speaking to club media in a video shared on X, Asi seems intent on taking a controlling role in the team’s attack.

Talking about the position he will play, he said: “I’ve played a lot of positions over the last few years but I’m looking to settle in at a spot in the halves so that’s what I’ll be looking forward to in 2025.”

He also noted former Eels teammate Zac Cini and half-back partner Milnes as two of those he was looking forward to playing alongside, as well as a more unexpected shout.

The 24-year-old said: “I played alongside Zac the last couple of years and he’s going to be a good player for us but I’m most looking forward to playing with Mells (Alex Mellor) – my back-rower.

“He had an outstanding year last year and I’m looking forward to building a combination with him, as well as Rowan (Milnes) – the other half. I’m looking forward to playing with those two.”

Mellor has been named one of the vice-captains at the club so will be vital in leading the team but Asi has revealed that leading the team on the pitch will be his sole focus for 2025.

Asked on his 2025 goals, he responded: “To improve my game personally – being able to lead around the boys around the park and keep building on that. Hopefully, that leads to more wins and more good performances for the team so that’s what I am most looking forward to.
