After the first team’s great win against Hull FC last night in Lee Radford’s return to the MKM Stadium after his shocking dismissal in 2020, Castleford’s reserves had less good fortunate against St Helens today.
Just as the Tigers put 40 passed Hull last night in their 46-18 win, the young Tigers today conceded 40 to the Saints as they lost 40-16 having trailed 16-0 at the break.
The Tigers did include four first teamers in the side in the shape of young quartet Cain Robb, Brad Martin, Sam Hall and Jason Qareqare all of whom have played for the first team in recent years and many of which have caught the eye especially Qareqare who started on the bench last week against Warrington and scored after replacing the injured Niall Evalds.
St Helens didn’t include many players with more than two games’ experience in Super League but did give a long awaited return to young second row Matty Foster who made his first team debut back in 2020 and spent much of last year on loan at Leigh where he suffered a long term injury which left him absent until today.
Lewis Baxter who was named in the 21-man squad for tomorrow’s game against Wakefield featured even scoring a brace of tries whilst Corkhill crossed for a hat trick in an impressive win for the Saints reserves.
Elsewhere today Wigan’s reserves defeated Wakefield’s 24-20 with Brad O’Neill the biggest name in the fixture for Wigan and Kyle Evans likewise for Wakefield.
Meanwhile, Hull FC’s reserves defeated Huddersfield 56-6 in a game almost exclusively featuring young players.
