Castleford Tigers hoping to build on 2024 ‘glimpses’ as star assesses Danny McGuire impact

Castleford Tigers will look to build on the “glimpses” they showed in 2024 as they aim to kick on under new head coach Danny McGuire.

Star player Liam Horne spoke on those “glimpses” when previewing the upcoming campaign in an interview on the Super League website which also saw him detail the impact of new head coach Danny McGuire and how the Tigers can build.

Key for Horne is the notion of consistency, a standard that McGuire will no doubt drive given his incredible record as a player at Leeds Rhinos and during his time as an assistant coach at Hull KR.

McGuire will have one of Super League‘s most versatile talents in Horne with the Papua New Guinean adept at both hooker and loose forward, whilst also operating in the halves in a pinch.

Despite the addition of fellow PNG international Judah Rimbu, Horne has been handed the number nine shirt for 2025 but he’s certain to make an impact wherever he plays – as he did last year when crowned as the Player’s Player of the Year.

Horne has now reflected on that campaign with the 26-year-old speaking on his expectations for the Tigers in 2025 given how strong Castleford were at times last year.

He said: “There were glimpses throughout the season against big teams – we got a win against Saints on their home patch and then had a couple of close games against Hull KR and more.

“When you get close games like that, it shows that we can do it and think this year with having a strong pre-season, we’re going to go well and have a really good season.”

Those efforts will now be overseen by Danny McGuire, who Horne spoke highly of, adding: “He [Danny McGuire] knows what success looks like; he’s won countless finals in his career. He knows what it takes to win, and he’s been transferring that over to us.

“Now, we’ve just got to buy into it and see how we go.”

Castleford take on Hull KR in Round One before then facing St Helens in what is a very tough start, however, Horne is simply focused on consistency – something he claims the Tigers lacked in 2024.

He explained: “Rugby League can change very quickly. For us, it’s about building our season slowly – step by step and game by game and that’s the way we’re going to look at it.

“Last year we’d have an excellent game which then would be followed with a poor game, so it’s important to really build consistency this year, and make sure we’re doing the right things throughout the week.

“Our intensity training has picked up a lot, so if we can keep doing those little things in the week and then come to game day, it’s all going to transfer over.”

Castleford Tigers will have one final run out before they start their competitive games with the Tigers set to face Hull FC this weekend in Joe Westerman’s testimonial match.
