Castleford Tigers head coach Lee Radford speaks on the disciplinary and RFL

The increase in the number and severity of bans for players within the sport has been a talking point in recent weeks.

The likes of James Bentley and Dylan Napa have been handed four-match bans whilst Luke Gale could be handed an even lengthier ban after tonight’s tribunal.

But, Castleford Tigers head coach Lee Radford has sympathy with the RFL.

“The game is in an incredibly tough situation, the head knock scenario is around – you need insurance to play the game and I can understand why they are taking zero tolerance on it,” ” Radford told BBC Radio Leeds.

“It is a tough physical sport and like boxing you expect to get punched in the face sometimes and if you don’t you’re probably kidding yourself.”

has praised the RFL for their open communication in recent weeks surrounding the issue.

“The RFL have now given us the ability to voice our opinions to them post-game,” Radford continued.

“With regards to the discipline, I was critical of the penalty count from Friday’s result, but the RFL have given us an opportunity to voice our opinion to the officials post-game.

“It was almost like a counselling session last night to hear them agree with some of our decisions and give the reasoning for it, and that’s massive.

“We’re critical as a sport but I think that’s a massive plus in the right direction.”

The Castleford head coach explained how the process worked.

“You receive an email from the liaison officer after the game, send them the footage and tell them your concerns and questions regarding something and they contact you within 24 hours and talk you through it.

We didn’t lose because of the officials but in a tight contest, which it was at half-time and ten minutes after half-time, big decisions can have a massive impact on the game.

“Some of the calls were tough but that’s a pat on the back for the RFL we’ve been able to speak to them.”
