Castleford Tigers boss gives Tom Amone injury update after Leeds Rhinos defeat

Castleford Tigers boss Danny McGuire has provided an update on the injury Tom Amone suffered in the first half of the clash with Leeds Rhinos. The Tigers lost the game 29-6 at Wheldon Road with Leeds scoring five tries to Castleford’s one through Louis Senior to move up to third in Super League.

It’s fair to say the Tigers had to do things tough, though, with Amone leaving the field after half an hour after taking a blow to the head while attempting to tackle Sam Lisone. He left the field immediately and never returned with the Hull KR-bound prop seen wrapped up on the sidelines in a jacket.

Speaking after the game, the head coach confirmed there was a groin issue at play as well as the concussion he picked up, which will rule him out of next week’s game with Warrington Wolves.

“I think it was a combination of a decent concussion and his groin so he probably would have struggled to carry on,” McGuire told Sky Sports. “The lads have done it tough and covered up a man down for 60 minutes and another challenge that was thrown at us but we got on with it.”

Danny McGuire pleased with Castleford Tigers efforts v Leeds Rhinos

On the game itself, McGuire made it clear that he was proud of his side’s efforts against the Rhinos, even though they were ultimately handed their ninth league defeat of the season.

“I thought they worked really hard and I’m really proud of everything they did,” the Castleford boss said. “Some bits didn’t go our way with tires and deflections but I thought they worked tirelessly from one to 17.

“It wasn’t pretty all the game but they were committed and spirited and I think the scoreline was a little unfair at the back end of the game. Leeds have got some really good players that can take those opportunities and take those moments.

“We lost Amone, we had a sin bin and had a bit of adversity but we stuck at it, stuck in there and when you can bring Cam Smith and Sam Lisone off the bench, that’s a pretty good weapon for Leeds to have but I thought we matched them across the park and I thought there wasn’t much in the game at all.”
