Castleford Tigers 12-32 Wigan Warriors: Highlights, player ratings and talking points

Castleford Tigers took on Wigan Warriors this afternoon at the Jungle as the Tigers made their Channel 4 debut.

The Tigers raced into a 12-0 lead after tries from Greg Eden and Kenny Edwards before Liam Marshall replied for Wigan as Castleford were down to 12 men following a yellow card to Mahe Fonua.

12-4 down at half-time, Wigan turned the screw in the second-half with three tries making it 20-12 as the Tigers looked shellshocked.

The Warriors added another two efforts to round off the scoring at 32-12.

Highlights

Kenny Edwards scoring a beautiful individual try, bouncing off three defenders to dot down.

Liam Marshall scored his 100th try in his 100th career appearance.

Bevan French notched a superb effort off a Liam Marshall kick through.

Talking points

1. Castleford ill-discipline

Castleford have been on the receiving end of a number of disciplinary issues this season, and they didn’t fare much better here with another yellow card handed out to Mahe Fonua. The Tigers centre kicked out at Wigan’s Liam Farrell following a tackle with a little scuffle following. With Castleford down to 12 men, the Warriors were able to capitalise through Liam Marshall.

2. Castleford poor

They went 12-0 up, but Castleford were quite awful after that with fragile defence on their line and remarkably poor attack. Too many times there was a one-man attack with little punch with absolutely nothing from the Tigers’ playmakers. Castleford’s forward pack look extremely lightweight and were beaten through the middle easily with the likes of Patrick Mago and Liam Byrne having a field day.

3. Wigan’s brilliant tries

Wigan moved the ball around with great effect, scoring three brilliant tries with the likes of Liam Marshall, Harry Smith and Bevan French running rings around Castleford. To back up so well after a Challenge Cup Final is very impressive and the Warriors should be incredibly proud of their efforts after such a brilliant week.
