Carney opens up on racism ban

Winger Justin Carney has opened up on the eight-match suspension he received for racial abuse in early May.

The 29-year-old was handed the ban after an incident involving Toronto Wolfpack’s Ryan Bailey while he was playing for Salford.

After he was found guilty, Carney departed the Red Devils to link up with Hull KR in the Championship but the former Castleford man is yet to speak about the episode.

However in an interview with the Hull Daily Mail, the prolific winger has recognised his mistake and wants to move on from the matter.

“I’ve been called a racist but I’ve never been racist in my life,” said Carney. “There’s more that goes into that type of stuff than what happened, so that was pretty disappointing to be tainted under that cloud.

“I did a stupid thing, but that doesn’t mean I’m racist. The people who know me as a person know who I am and what I stand for and they’re the only ones that matter.

“Maybe that sounds a bit arrogant, but I’ve seen the other side of it and it isn’t a pretty place at all.

“I don’t want to move anymore. I want to play here for a good while now and I’ll put my best foot forward and do the best that I possibly can.”

Carney played his second game for Hull KR in this afternoon’s 40-22 victory against London, a result that secured top spot in the Championship for the Robins.
