Canberra eye Super League halfback as replacement for George Williams

Gareth Widdop is on Canberra’s radar as a potential replacement for George Williams, the age.com has reported.

The Halifax-born halfback moved to Warrington ahead of the 2020 season, but has recently hit some great form after a less-than successful first year in England.

Widdop’s manager is requesting approximately $500,000 to join the Raiders, with New Zealand Warriors also said to be interested in acquiring the 32-year-old’s signature.

Such a move could free up the salary cap space necessary for Warrington to sign George Williams, who continues to be linked with the Wolves and former club Wigan.

Widdop has played 23 games for Warrington, scoring 11 tries and kicking 21 goals and one drop-goal.
