Brisbane Broncos World Club Challenge injury update amid key man’s surgery

World Club Challenge

Brisbane Broncos star Pat Carrigan has been passed fit to feature against Hull KR in next month’s World Club Challenge.

As NRL champions, the Broncos will be travelling over to East Yorkshire in February to face Willie Peters’ treble winners at the MKM Stadium. It’s a clash that has already sold out and while most of those attending will be supporting those in red and white, they’ll be keen to catch a glimpse of some of the Broncos’ superstars.

Carrigan is most certainly one of those, but the forward has been carrying a hand issue over the last few month. The Queensland man played through the pain of a broken thumb to win the NRL Grand Final in October and he managed to get through the three-Test Ashes series for Australia, too.

He underwent surgery on his return to Australia, though, and Brisbane head coach Michael Maguire has confirmed that the 28-year-old will be on the plan with his Broncos teammates when they travel to Hull.

Brisbane Broncos’ World Club Challenge boost

“He’s fine, he’ll be back (in full) training soon and he actually trained the other day,” Maguire told Daily Telegraph.

“They had to take the wire out, but he’s good to go and he will be back up and about soon.

“He’s had a good little break.”

Maguire added: “He did (play with a broken thumb).

“To his credit, he kept it under wraps like everyone did and just went about what he needed to do.

“He had one thing in mind and that was to get to where he got to (win a premiership), which says a lot about the different individuals we have in the team and the things they do for each other.

“There’s quite a lot of stories and that makes the group who they are.”

Brisbane are expected to travel with a something close to a strength side to Hull as they bid to become the first NRL team to win the World Club Challenge since Sydney Roosters in 2020.
