Brisbane Broncos boss Michael Maguire has no plans to become the head coach of England any time soon.
Maguire has been one of the names linked with potentially replacing Shaun Wane at the England helm following this autumn’s whitewash defeat to Australia in the Ashes. Wane’s side massively underwhelmed in the three-Test series and there are now huge question marks about whether the former Wigan man will remain in charge for next year’s World Cup.
Speaking to the BBC earlier this week, Nigel Wood confirmed that a review process will take place over the coming weeks and months and Wane’s position will be assessed.
In the meantime a number of names have been thrown up for the job, particularly in the Australian press, with Maguire’s name being put forward. Maguire knows his way around the international game having coached New Zealand for six seasons between 2018 and 2023 and he has worked in Super League before, too.
However, the current Brisbane boss, who led the side to NRL glory last month, has ruled out the possibility of him taking over from Wane ahead of the World Cup.
“No chance,” Maguire told the Courier Mail when asked if he would be keen on the England role.
“We have a big season ahead – that’s my focus.
“You have to keep your head down and keep working and that is part of what I love doing with my players.
“The growth I saw this year with our group has been excellent and the other 16 teams will be hungry to knock us off next season.
“I’m hungry to get better myself – that’s what this competition demands.”
Maguire is currently in England and made a visit to London Broncos to speak with Danny Ward and Mike Eccles earlier this week.
