Brisbane Broncos Grand Finalist reportedly joins Super League side

Tyson Smoothy linked with Super League

A man who featured for Brisbane Broncos in the 2023 Grand Final is reportedly set to make a move to Super League.

According to reports Down Under, Brisbane hooker Tyson Smoothy will depart the club at the end of the 2025 season and make the switch to Super League.

That comes following a number of other nines beating Smoothy out to both a start and bench spot with new signing Ben Hunt among those, despite the fact he’ll start in the halves.

As a result, Smoothy has reportedly looked at his options and made the decision to move to Super League where he will join Wakefield Trinity.

Per reports, the 25-year-old will sign a three-year deal with the club in what looks to be another very smart piece of recruitment from Trinity after a strong off-season of signings.

Trinity fans look set to get a chance to see Smoothy in action this weekend as he has been named in Brisbane’s squad for their trial match against Gold Coast Titans.

Smoothy is set to start at hooker in the match which will be available to watch on both WatchNRL and Sky Sports Action in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Despite the number of players ahead of him in the pecking order, the reports Down Under clarify that Brisbane did want to retain Smoothy’s services – albeit at a lower deal.

As such, he opted for a Super League switch with Wakefield Trinity seemingly his destination.

During his NRL career, Smoothy has made 38 NRL appearances, starting his career with Melbourne Storm in 2021 before making the switch to Brisbane.

Currently, Wakefield Trinity have Liam Hood as their hooker with Thomas Doyle also part of their first-team squad but the chance to sign a player with NRL pedigree, including in the Grand Final, has seemingly been too good to refuse.
