Toronto head coach Brian McDermott has confirmed star signing Sonny Bill Williams is set to undergo knee surgery.

The 34-year-old didn’t feature in the Wolfpack’s 18-0 Challenge Cup win at Huddersfield last night.

“Sonny Bill has got a little bit of a sore knee at the moment,” McDermott told the Yorkshire Post. “We might have a look at having that operated on.

“He might go have that checked out on Saturday. Fingers crossed, by all accounts it’s going to be a 10-day or two-week job at worst.”

Despite missing Williams and fellow veteran Jon Wilkin, Toronto were impressive in their nilling of early-season high-flyers Huddersfield.

Ricky Leutele scored the only two tries of the game, with Gareth O’Brien’s boot adding a further 10 points as the Candian outfit won their first game of the season.

Remarkably, McDermott only used 14 players for the entire match at the John Smith’s Stadium, choosing not to field three of his four interchanges.
