Ahead of Hull FC’s clash with Catalans today, coach Brett Hodgson has addressed his side’s form speaking to the club’s official website.
Hull have a chance to leapfrog neighbours Hull KR into the top four with a win despite a season which has been up and down so far. For every comprehensive win like the one at Headingley there’s been a disappointing loss such as their defeat to Champions St Helens or their cup exit at Huddersfield.
Hull need to find some consistently good form following victory over Warrington if they are to finish in the top four and Hodgson believes finding the right balance in attack is central to this.
“It’s a fine balance between overplaying and playing with control, and that’s what we need to find,” Hodgson told Hull FC website, “We’re going to make mistakes during games and that’s fine, we don’t really worry about the mistakes we’re making on the front foot but against KR we were doing it the wrong way.
“We encourage the players to look for opportunities but there are times where we go searching for it rather than it presenting itself.”
So, an improvement in the way Hull use the ball will be key to them finding consistency and settling into the top four race according to Hodgson but also central to Hull’s prospects in 2022 will be keeping key players fit.
Today, Hull will have Scott Taylor back for the first time this season and Hodgson has said there is a plan in place to manage the big forward’s return: “As always with someone coming off a substantial injury like that we have to be mindful of how much we can play him [Taylor], but the game doesn’t always play out that way and you need to ask big minutes of big men and Tag is more than capable of that.
“We’ll have a plan for Sunday and hopefully it works out that way.”
