Championship favourites Bradford Bulls have snapped up a new forward after his release from a competition rival.
Sheffield Eagles confirmed the exit of Bayley Liu earlier today with the back-rower leaving the club by mutual consent and Bradford Bulls have been quick to snap the Scotland international up.
The move comes during a week that has seen the Bulls release forward Keven Appo after a number of sexual assault charges including rape were brought against him by West Yorkshire Police.
Bradford confirmed Appo’s release in the aftermath of West Yorkshire Police’s statement confirming the charges against the Papua New Guinean international.
Brian Noble’s club have now added more strength to their pack with the addition of Liu who had been expected to be a key member of Sheffield Eagles’ pack in 2025 given his pedigree.
During his time with the Eagles, Liu played 58 games and scored 20 tries including seven in 2024.
Bradford Bulls sign Scotland international Bayley Liu
The Bulls confirmed the signing of Liu by posting a video to their social media captioned “Bayley is a Bull” showcasing the impressive highlight reel of the second-rower.
He will bring size and strength to a pack that is already expected to be very strong in 2025 with the Bulls having made additions such as ex-Leeds Rhinos man James Donaldson and securing the future of players like Franklin Pele.
A statement on the club’s website confirmed Liu’s arrival, reading: “Bradford Bulls are delighted to announce the signing of powerful back row forward Bayley Liu on a one-year deal from Sheffield Eagles!
“The 28-year-old, who was born in New Zealand, featured for West Wales Raiders and Dewsbury Rams prior to his two-and-a-half-year stint as an Eagle.”
Speaking in the signing, head coach Brian Noble said: “It makes us look a whole lot healthier, he can play back row and has played a lot in the centre too so he adds that utility value.
“We’ve had our eye on Bayley for a couple of years but it didn’t quite come to fruition so when we were offered the opportunity this time around we jumped in and we have bolstered our squad.
“Like everyone in the squad, Bayley will have to fight for his place but what I do know is he has a good offload and terrific feet for a big man.
“He is an exciting, big athlete that will add to the hard-working squad we have got, who have improved their fitness measurably and he will play his part throughout the season to help us be successful.”
