Bradford Bulls’ Super League ambitions cited as reason why rival forward signed with club

Bradford Bulls’ Super League ambitions have been highlighted as one of the major reasons why their recent recruit signed for them.

The Bulls were able to strengthen by signing second-row forward Bayley Liu after his release from Championship rivals Sheffield Eagles with the 28-year-old Scotland international sure to improve Brian Noble’s squad.

During his time with Sheffield, Liu made 58 appearances and scored 20 tries which highlights his pedigree at Championship level, however, the New Zealand-born forward has referenced the Bulls’ Super League ambitions as a key factor in his signing.

Speaking to club media, he said: “When I first came to the UK it was a club you just knew you wanted to be at, so to be able to sign a deal here I am really excited.

“Bradford is a club that is ambitious, that wants to go to Super League and I want to be a part of that.”

The Bulls ranked 16th in the IMG grades that were released in late October, just under two points shy of Super League but over three points clear of Liu’s former club Sheffield.

Liu has also explained how the Odsal crowd factored into his decision to make the cross-Championship switch, as he recalled a game in 2023.

He explained: “When I played for Sheffield I always hated playing against Bradford as it was a really tough game, so it is good to be on the other side now!

“I remember a game at Sheffield in 2023 against Bradford, I made a mistake which led to a try and the crowd were right on top of me so it will be good being on the opposite side now!”

The Bulls now have a stacked squad that is favoured to go well in the Championship by many, including Sheffield boss Craig Lingard, but Liu is well aware that he will have to earn his spot.

He said: “As a player you always want to start or be in the team but first and foremost I need to earn my coaches and teammates respect. I am a back-rower but I will play anywhere, you always want to be playing so that’s what I want to be doing.”

That versatility has been referenced by Bradford Bulls coach Brian Noble who explained that Liu could cover at centre for the club if needed.
