Brad Arthur has given his verdict on his Leeds Rhinos side’s performance, following their defeat to Hull KR this afternoon.

It was his first game in charge of a Super League game, and it could easily have resulted in a victory, but they eventually slipped to a 20-12 defeat at Headingley Stadium.

The Rhinos lead twice in the game, but two late tries meant they tasted defeat to the side that may now feel they’re in pole position to take second place in the league.

Lachie Miller’s try, after a freak incident where the ball bounced off the crossbar, looked to have won the game until Jai Whitbread and Jez Litten’s tries gave Rovers the win.

Giving his verdict on the team’s performance as a whole, during the post-game press conference, he said: “We started well. We got into the grind, we went set for set, and we just stuck at it and stuck at it.

“Even in the second half, we didn’t start great, but we probably should have scored to go to 10-0 – then from there, they go down the other end of the field and get a 6 again.

“But then we were able to stay in and just stick to it and keep fighting and we stayed in and got back to in front with six minutes to go and then from there you need to find a way to win.”

Asked if this game had given him more of an idea of the side, he responded: “Yeah, it has.

“It’s proved to me what I’ve seen during the week that they care and they do want to play well and they do want to get better.

“I’ve seen that, but effort needs to be a given in the game – and physicality-  and showing that you care, but we need to find ways to try and win games of football and that’s got to be the priority.”
