Bookies tip surprise team to miss top six as Leigh Leopards backed for playoffs

Leigh Leopards

Last week marked the moment when Super League transitioned into the second half of the season and with that, it means the race for the playoffs is officially heating up. Bookmakers have now named a shock team to miss out with Leigh Leopards tipped to break into that top six.

Whilst Super League has never been won from the sixth-place spot in the playoffs, you still have to be in them to even have a chance and that’s why the race for that sixth spot is so crucial.

Super League this season has seen a clear top two emerge in St Helens and Wigan Warriors with the chasing pack of Hull KR, Warrington Wolves and Catalans Dragons forming behind. In turn that’s left just one place in the playoffs for a host of teams to contend for.

Last season the sixth spot was nicked by Warrington Wolves who just managed to cling on from an advancing Salford Red Devils and despite sitting in fifth-place this season, the bookmakers are tipping the Red Devils to miss the playoffs and in fact, finish eighth.

That’s seen a shock team from outside the top six tipped to make the playoffs in what would require an impressive end-of-season run of form.

Bookmakers Bet365, the biggest online betting company in the UK, have updated their odds on which teams will make the top six at the end of the Super League season and that’s seen them predict Adrian Lam’s Leigh Leopards to make the cut.

Leigh currently sit in ninth with just 11 points after 13 games, however, they have picked nine of those points up in their last six games highlighting a key turnaround in form.

Even so, they will likely have to win nine of their remaining 14 games to make the top six with a tally of 28 points or more usually signifying the cutoff. Nine wins would take Leigh Leopards to 29, a total that would guarantee playoffs in each of the last three seasons.

With Leigh Leopards predicted to move from ninth to sixth, it means the bookmakers have priced a team out of the playoffs and incredibly that is the Salford Red Devils.

Despite being level on points with Warrington Wolves with 18 and four points clear of seventh as well as a whopping seven points clear of Leigh, Salford have been priced up at 11/10 to make the top six.

They’re actually the eighth-longest odds with coachless Leeds Rhinos at a shorter price than Paul Rowley’s side. Of course, current speculation linking Rowley to Leeds could be playing into those odds but it’s still a huge surprise to see Salford so unfancied by the bookmakers.

Are the Red Devils once again being overlooked or can Leigh Leopards make a second-half-of-the-season comeback and crack the playoffs for the second year in a row?

Salford will stay in top 6 with Rowley at the helm. The 2 in danger are Catalans and Warrington. Warrington have a history of falling away, and catalans have lost too many important players. Still very tough for leigh to catch up. They will need their top players to steer free of injury.
