If the rest of Super League is hoping that Wigan Warriors‘ star Bevan French had got complacent ahead of the 2025 season, they’d be wrong.
In 2024, he won the Player of the Match award in the World Club Challenge, Challenge Cup Final and the Super League Grand Final.
Speaking to Sky Sports’ Jenna Brooks before the Warriors game against Leigh Leopards, the Wigan man remained the composed figure that fans have got used to seeing.
Talking about where he’s looking to improve his game in 2025, he was open about wanting to become a more complete player.
He said: “Personally, I think defence has always been a big one for me and I want to work on it.”
On top of that, French is hoping to work on his combinations with fellow halfback Harry Smith to complement his game.
He added: “Harry (Smith)’s been doing quite a bit of the game management and kicking.
“Teams are starting to pick on that now so I’m trying to share that role there; I think it’ll help the rest of the team out a little bit as well.
“I’m going into a lot of areas that need to improve on so there’s always a lot to learn,” he said.
When looking forward to the new season, French remains a calm presence in the dressing room.
He said: “I’ve always kept that same attitude of wanting to learn and nothing really changes for me, regardless of what happened last year, whether we won or not.
“It’s just trying to learn every week, every day, trying to learn to improve on the little things.
“I just try to stay calm and level-headed and keep that mindset throughout the whole season,” he finished.
Bevan French has bought into head coach Matt Peet’s entire coaching philosophy and it’s visible in how he plays the game.
He might already be one of the best players in the league but he’s determined to get even better, which is definitely a warning shot to every team in Super League.
