‘Best they’ve played for a couple of years’ – Adrian Lam praises Leeds Rhinos for honouring Rob Burrow

Leeds Rhinos

Leeds Rhinos and Leigh Leopards met in an emotional night at AMT Headingley yesterday, as the Rugby League family united to pay tribute to former Leeds legend, Rob Burrow. In a fitting tribute to Burrow, the two sides produced a pulsating display, resulting in an 18-10 Rhinos win.

Leeds were inspired by a half-back display from Brodie Croft which Burrow would have been proud of. He scored two tries, the first a jinking solo run which saw him beat several Leigh defenders, and the second a full-length dash, where Croft showed lightning pace to leave the Leigh defence behind.

Leigh threatened to fight back and debutant, Aaron Pene, produced a magnificent display which is sure to have given Leopards fans plenty to get excited about. The Leigh fans also played their part in the magnificent tribute to Burrow, unveiling a huge banner in tribute to the former Leeds number seven.

Speaking in the aftermath of his side’s narrow defeat, Lam reflected on the events of the night.

Following the game, Lam discussed Leeds’ victorious performance in his press conference on Leopards TV. He paid tribute to the way in which the Rhinos organised the tributes to Burrow and the way the fans got behind the occasion.

He also believed the emotion of the night inspired the Rhinos to produce their best performance for a long time. Lam said:

“It’s been a magnificent night here tonight, well set up and the fans come out to support the cause and the tribute towards Rob and I’m pleased for the club you know. I think the team turned up tonight and probably played their best rugby they’ve done all year so you know I’m pleased for them.”

Before adding: “With all respect I think that’s the best they’ve played for a couple of years, to be honest.”

Their victory moves Leeds back level on points with sixth-placed Catalans Dragons in Super League, with the French side still to play later today.

Lam went onto explain the unique emotions that the game brought about, given the extraordinary circumstances in which the game was played. Whilst disappointed that his side were not able to get the two points, Lam was pleased for the Leeds fans and the Burrow family that the Rhinos were able to secure the two points.

He believes they received some help from above to inspire them, in both attack and defence. Lam said:

“It was a bit of a rollercoaster really the feelings during the match. I’m pleased for Leeds though, I thought that was a really special night for the club and for the fans and for Rob and the family.

“You could see that being reflected in the way that they played. ” Lam stated.

“They defended really well and saved a couple of tries by holding the ball up over the line, so it looked like they had a little bit of extra help from above. So I’m pleased for them. It was a great night for the club.
