Benji Marshall has always been a special rugby league player, but he has always been a special kind of person too.
The Sydney Morning Herald has revealed just how generous the talismanic halfback can be after conducting an interview with former Wests Tigers centre Chris Lawrence.
“At the end of 2019, the club told me they had no wiggle room in the salary cap to keep me,” Lawrence said.
“All of a sudden they came back and said ‘we can make it work’. I asked ‘how does that just magically happen?
“They hinted that someone may have helped out. There was only one guy I knew would do that. That’s Benji Marshall for you.”
Marshall is widely expected to retire at the end of 2021 after ending his career at the South Sydney Rabbitohs, but whether or not he will bow out with another Grand Final success is another question.
All everyone in rugby league knows is just how incredible Marshall has been for the sport.
