Benji Marshall set for major charity initiative

Benji Marshall is set to provide a major charity initiative this weekend.

It’s an attempt by the former Wests Tigers and Brisbane Broncos halfback to give back to the community after his retirement.

Marshall posted on his Instagram profile: “Hey guys. Just letting everyone know. There will be a charity event this Friday evening at Leichhardt Oval to try and inspire kids of all ages to believe in themselves and Dream big. There will be special prizes and lots of giveaways as well.

A Wests Tigers legend, Marshall registered 346 appearances for the club in two spells following his debut in 2003, but now returns as an official club ambassador after hanging up his boots at the end of the 2021 NRL season.

The rugby league legend – who had one last swansong with the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2021 – endured something of a fractious ending to his Wests playing career which is why many people have called the return a shock, but couldn’t resist working alongside new director of football Tim Sheens.

Marshall recently gave an interview with the Daily Mail, revealing why he is working alongside the Dream Big charity.

“I grew up in a small town in New Zealand, we weren’t a rich family so I didn’t have many opportunities or pathways to get to where I am,” Marshall said.

“I think I made it to where I am because of the way I was brought up.

“We didn’t have a lot of things growing up, but we had a lot of love, discipline, and respect and I want my kids to have the same.

“I want my kids to know that it’s nice to be able to give something back to charity and to the wider community,” he added.

“Obviously they’re going to have a few more things than I did, but the principles will still be the same.”

It comes in the wake of his ‘Dream Big’ charity event in Sydney at Leichardt on December 17, with the likes of Eurovision singer Isaiah Firebrace with tickets free.
