Ben Barba at Magic Weekend ahead of Super League move

Ben Barba Magic Weekend

Australian full-back Ben Barba was in attendance at today’s Magic Weekend as he prepares for talks ahead of a move to Super League.

As reported last week, St Helens and Warrington are favourites to sign the former Dally M Medal winner who is set to exit Rugby Union after a short stint in France.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Barba said: “I can’t give too much away right now because I’m still contracted to Toulon but I’ve got some decisions to make over the next few days.

“I want to get back playing Rugby League and there should be an announcement next week.”

Barba was sacked by Cronulla Sharks for recreational drug use and was subsequently banned for 12 weeks by the NRL at the end of last season.

An RFL spokesperson stated in January that any NRL drugs ban would be carried over into Super League, meaning he would have to wait until the Super 8’s to make his league debut in England.

Barba was in Newcastle today to get a taste of Super League and he certainly seems to be enjoying the action.

“I think Magic Weekend is a great concept,” he said. “The first thing that hit me was the noise of the fans so hopefully I can be part of it some day.”

With change very much the current theme at St Helens after the arrival of new coach Justin Holbrook, Langtree Park could be Barba’s most likely destination as the club seek a return to their former glories.

Speaking after Saints 45-0 victory over Hull FC, Holbrook said: “I’ve had a couple of chats with him. Hopefully it can all be worked out.”

Barba is also believed to have been in the Saints dressing room at St James’ Park following today’s game making a move to the Red Vee more likely.
