Leigh Centurions owner Derek Beaumont has been more active than usual on social media in recent days and weeks.
But, regardless of your opinion on him, he always speaks the truth.
And, following Leigh’s 64-0 thrashing at the hands of Catalans Dragons yesterday, the outspoken chairman took to Twitter to show just how easy it would have been to cancel the fixture and take a 24-0 hit with a massive fine on the top of that.
Instead, Beaumont took the decision to fly his team out there – at a cost of £36,000 – in a bid to maintain his and the competition’s integrity.
The Leigh owner also pointed to the fact that his side are having their own COVID issues amidst the increasingly uncertain times in rugby league.
Credit to Beaumont and the Centurions, though, it would have been easier to take the financial punishment alongside yet another loss.
Doing it tough but doing it right! Advised give 24-0 and take 35k fine with 15k suspend and protect lads for magic and save 36k on going over to get a 64 nil We would only ever do the right thing as av all year despite our own Covid issues £11k and 40 point loss but av integrity! https://t.co/UcnCRLtH19
