Batley sign Super League winner

Batley Bulldogs have confirmed the signing of hooker Shaun Lunt from Leeds Rhinos for the 2020 season.

Lunt had left the Rhinos after spending the latter part of 2019 at the club where he won the Super League title. He went on to help them secure their Super League status.

He started his career at Castleford Tigers, before moving to Workington Town in the Championship.

It was at the Town where Lunt made his name. He scored an impressive 57 tries in 74 games in Cumbria, he then got a move back to the Super League with Huddersfield Giants.

Whilst at the Giants, he had two loan spells out, including at Leeds and Hull KR. Whilst at Leeds, he won the Super League, and also reached the Challenge Cup Final.

Despite going out on loan twice, he still scored 71 tries in 123 appearances for the Giants.

After his loan spell at the Rovers, he joined them permanently and scored 23 tries across 70 games as he led them back into the Super League.

He then went back to Leeds as part of a swap deal with Matt Parcell.

Batley Chief Executive Paul Harrison told the club website: “This is a massive signing for the club. To have a player with this level of experience is invaluable and we’re excited to be welcoming Shaun to The Bulldogs.”

Lunt will be hoping to go straight in the squad for the first game of the season, as they take on Featherstone Rovers at the Fox’s Biscuits Stadium on Sunday February 2nd.
