Bateman reveals he was close to signing with a Sydney based NRL club

John Bateman has revealed to the Telegraph’s Ross Heppenstall that the Canberra Raiders weren’t the only NRL club chasing after the Englishman’s signature last year.

Bateman revealed that he came close too signing for the team his Raiders battle in the Grand Final qualifier this weekend, England National Team head coach Wayne Bennett’s South Sydney Rabbitohs.

Bateman had this to say:

“Joining Souths was actually a big option for me.

When I was making my decision about who to join, there were signs of Wayne Bennett going there and he’s been a big influence on my career with England.”
