Canberra Raiders back rower John Bateman has been dealt a blow during his recovery from a shoulder injury, with the news that he requires additional surgery.
The England international had hoped to be back on the field for the Raiders’ Round 5 game against Wests Tigers but now faces an extended period on the side lines.
He met with a surgeon this week, who advised that surgery was the best cause of action, with the club confirming that a time frame on his recovery will be known post-surgery.

“I’m gutted to be having surgery again but it’s what’s best for me and the team and to help me get back on the field as soon as possible,” Bateman said.
“I’ll be working harder than ever with my rehab to get myself back on the field with the lads. See you all soon.”
While Bateman is out of action indefinitely, Canberra have confirmed fellow English forward Ryan Sutton is nearing a return from a calf problem and should be fit for their clash against the Tigers in ten days time.
