Barrie McDermott makes big claim about St Helens’ World Club Challenge win

Barrie McDermott

Sky Sports pundit and former Leeds Rhinos and Wigan Warriors prop Barrie McDermott has described St Helens’ win over Penrith Panthers to be crowned as World Champions.

He said: “That’s the best result and performance by a British RL team on foreign soil.

“Saints absolutely deserved that win and dominated from start to finish so glad they/we won well done Wello and every single one of those boys.”

This echoed what Kyle Amor had to say about the game on Channel 4:

“They are the Champions the last four years and to go down under and win in the lions’ den, they have come up with the performance to put Super League on a world stage.

“I cannot stress how big that moment is, that is probably the best and greatest win ever in Super League.”

He also gave his verdict on whether Jack Welsby should go to the NRL:

“He needs to get that test week in week out, with Jack there will be a price tag put on his head.”

He then went on to say he thinks the Super League Champions are unstoppable.

“Saints had all the excuses, they lost Tommy Makinson. That is an enormous win for Super League and for St Helens.

“They are going to enjoy that and then they will fly home and take on Castleford Tigers.

“Who can stop Saints this year.”
