Barrie McDermott claims Super League coach is under pressure

Barrie McDermott

Wherever Leeds Rhinos go at the moment they seem to heap pressure on coaches as we have seen against Huddersfield Giants and Warrington Wolves.

It is somewhat ironic given the fact that when Leeds lost to Wakefield Trinity in Round 15 it was Rohan Smith under pressure.

But when they battered Huddersfield Giants 54-0 the game after that it was Ian Watson under pressure before a brilliant 22-6 win over Warrington Wolves last week heaped the pressure on Daryl Powell as the Wolves lost second place with Leigh Leopards and Wigan Warriors winning.

But is Powell really under pressure? The former Leeds and Castleford Tigers coach still has the Wolves in the top six after an 11th place finish.

He is also without stars like George Williams and plenty of his forwards which is exacerbated by the fact that both Thomas Mikaele and Josh McGuire.

After the game against Leeds Powell did something very unusual which was spotted on Sky Sports.

He stayed in his coaching box after the game by himself gathering his thoughts.

After this, Barrie McDermott claimed Powell is under pressure.

“I think he is under pressure for his job. But I think he will put himself under pressure, he is that kind of coach.”

Adding to this pressure is the fact that former St Helens coach Justin Holbrook is now available after his Gold Coast Titans exit.
