Former Wigan Warriors star and Leeds Rhinos target has been released from NRL contract

Though a Wigan Warriors star in the shape of John Bateman is being linked with a move back to the NRL and specifically Wests Tigers where he could link up with former teammate Jackson Hastings, one former Wigan star won’t be with the Tigers in 2023.

The Tigers confirmed as such early this morning after he made eight appearances for the club in 2022.

Gildart struggled to force his way into the first team at Wests in 2022 which resulted in a successful loan move to the Sydney Roosters who had been rumoured to want the centre in 2023.

Likewise, the NRL’s newest club The Dolphins were also reportedly interest in signing him for 2023 where he could re-unite with former England coach Wayne Bennett.

However, there are of course Super League suitors. Earlier this year, Leeds Rhinos were expected to bring the former Wigan Warriors star to Headingley before the move fell through.

Now with Zak Hardaker and Liam Sutcliffe both leaving the club, Gildart would be an ideal signing especially after they used up their last quota spot to sign Sam Lisone for next year from the Gold Coast Titans.

So rumours of a move to Headingley are unsurprising meanwhile there have also been rumours that Gildart could make the switch to Warrington in 2023.

It remains to be seen which of these clubs will acquire his services in 2023 but if this report is true, Gildart won’t be with the Tigers next year despite signing a multi-year deal with them at the end of 2021.
