Assessing why two stars received different punishments for same offence

A huge 15 players have been charged by the Match Review Panel after Rivals Round.

It is by far the most this season but expected after the most fiery fixtures of the season took place over the Easter weekend.

There were 17 charges handed out with Rhys Kennedy of Hull KR and Joe Westerman of Castleford Tigers charged twice.

Kennedy receives no ban with Westerman picking up a one match ban.

Speaking of bans, 10 players have picked up bans.

Four of them came from the Hull derby which is to be expected of such a big game.

The big news is of course Gil Dudson being referred to a tribunal for his red card against his former club Catalans Dragons.

Salford Red Devils stars Matt Costello and Tyler Dupree were both cautioned as was Wigan Warriors star Bevan French for other contrary behaviour.

Following the latest round of Betfred Super League fixtures, the Match Review Panel have issued the following sanctions:

Charges

John Asiata – Leigh Leopards – Strikes – A – Not applicable
James Batchelor – Hull KR – Dangerous Contact – C – 1 Match Penalty Notice

You will see that Joe Westerman and Zak Hardaker have both received different punishments for the same offence.

If you were hoping the minutes would explain why, they won’t.

Westerman’s minutes reads: “Trips – Intentional Trip”

And Hardaker’s does the same: “Trips – Intentional Trip”

The panel must have determined Westerman’s to have been more severe.

Perhaps this is because Westerman’s was near the try line and stopped a potential attacking opportunity.
