Argyle wants to buy Widnes and relocate to Liverpool

Fox Sports are reporting that Toronto Wolfpack owner David Argyle wants to buy Widnes Vikings but will only do so if he can relocate the club to Liverpool.

The Vikings are on the verge of administration after the collapse of a takeover bid meant they were unable to pay their players and staff this week.

There has been talk of Marwan Koukash starting a Liverpool-based team, but he distanced himself from the rumours on Twitter this morning.

But now it seems Argyle is interested in spreading his involvement in the sport to the North West, with plans to save Widnes from liquidation before rebranding the club.

The mining billionaire has funded Toronto’s rugby league journey from the start and also has shares in League 1 outfit London Skolars.

Widnes fans have reacted angrily to the rumours but if no other bids are made for the club, they may have no option but to watch Argyle take control of the former World Club Champions.

The Vikings financial uncertainty has resulted from their relegation from Super League and former CEO James Rule leaving the club at the start of this month.

What lies next for the Cheshire-based outfit remains to be seen, but they have until Monday to secure major investment in order to avoid administration.
