Andrew Henderson reveals why he left Warrington Wolves following Daryl Powell’s appointment

Daryl Powell took over at the Warrington Wolves ahead of the 2022 Super League season following almost nine years at the Castleford Tigers.

That meant that both Andrew Henderson and Lee Briers also followed Steve Price out the door at the Halliwell Jones Stadium with Powell bringing in the likes of Ryan Sheridan and Danny Evans in as his coaching staff.

And, now Henderson has spoken about just how the exit was confirmed.

“Daryl Powell was appointed as head coach and wanted to bring his own coaching team with him to Warrington, so that was simply why my contract wasn’t renewed,” Henderson told Serious About Rugby League.

“It wasn’t a reflection on myself, or the other guys who weren’t retained.”

“Fortunately, Lee Briers and Jack Phillips secured a move to Wigan and I decided to join Keighley when presented with the opportunity.”

Now, the former Super League and Championship hooker has joined Keighley – but not in a coaching role which he has become accustomed to since hanging up the boots.

“I have taken on the role of Head of Rugby at Keighley Cougars to help develop the performance department there.

“It’s slightly different to coaching as it involves strategic planning, management and administration in a different context.

“It’s a position I feel I can add value to and have a positive impact in, alongside being an opportunity to improve my skill set within rugby league and the sports industry,” Henderson added.

“My main job description is to oversee performance operations, set up performance pathways for younger players and deal with recruitment and retention of staff and players moving forward.”

Henderson will however still occupy a coaching role this season when it was recently announced that he would once again be assistant coach of the Combined Nations All Stars team supporting Rugby League legend Ellery Hanley in the upcoming mid season international against England in June.
