Analysing who the Featherstone Rovers signing tonight could be after Matty Russell ruled out

Featherstone Rovers have confirmed that they will be announcing a new signing tonight.

It comes as the club looks to secure promotion to Super League after coming up short in 2021 and 2022.

They have a new man in charge in the shape of ex-Leeds Rhinos assistant Sean Long.

He has already made moves in the transfer market signing the likes of former Wigan Warriors centre Chris Hankinson and Catalans Dragons prop Mathieu Cozza.

But the club are set to announce another signing tonight at a fan event which will see Long speak to fans about the year ahead.

He will be joined by Elijah Taylor who the Rovers signed from Salford Red Devils after he was log expected to sign for Wakefield Trinity.

But who else will follow Taylor to Post Office Road in 2023?

Well it won’t be Matty Russell. The winger was tipped by some to join the club from Toulouse Olympique which was contrary to reports from France that he wanted a Super League move.

He now has his Super League move as he joins former club Warrington Wolves for the new Super League season on a 12-month deal with an option for a second year.

The Game Caller meanwhile reported this week that Wigan Warriors prop Patrick Mago and Toulouse Olympique playmaker and former Lance Todd Trophy winner Tony Gigot were headed to Post Office Road.

This has been disputed however. It could be either of them revealed tonight although it does seem unlikely based on what has been said.

Halfback Brandon Wakeham is another option. He is a free agent and shone in the Rugby League World Cup with Fiji. After the loss of Ryley Jacks and Morgan Smith a halfback could be key.

This is why former Man of Steel, Castleford Tigers, Leeds Rhinos and Hull FC star Luke Gale could also be the man revealed by the Rovers tonight.

Lastly, Caleb Aekins is another player who has been linked with a move to Featherstone after he was let go of by Leigh Leopards due to their need to fit beneath the overseas quota of seven players.

They signed Zak Hardaker as his replacement.

Aekins had been rumoured to be joining the Rovers a while back but talk of this has gone cold recently though it could be him and he would be a very safe bet.

Of course, don’t rule out a signing for the women’s team as well.

Whoever is revealed, they can look forward to donning a striking away shirt next season which was released this morning and can be read about here.
