Agent backs first £1 million English player to come from World Cup with ‘NRL clubs hunting’

The Rugby League World Cup is now just 10 days away with the tournament giving hundreds of players the chance to showcase themselves on the biggest stage of all.

Many clubs in both England and Australia with space still on their salary cap will be keeping a keen eye on the action, with the emergence of some new talent likely, while many known Super League players will be looking to show those overseas that they have what it takes to compete with the best.

Rugby league agent Craig Harrison, of Show Me The Money UK, says scouts and chairman from every NRL club will be present, giving English players the chance to earn a big move, with Harrison backing the first £1 million English player to emerge from the event.

Speaking on The Full Eighty Minute Podcast, he said: “I’ve had three phone calls, every top NRL club and their chairman are here. They are coming next week.

“They are here next week with their notepads, and they are hunting, and they are wanting to take players. This World Cup is the biggest scouting arena.

“The stage is set. If you are an England player your life could change now. There will be some lad’s lives that are going to change.

“The salary cap over there promotes a £1 million player. We might get the first English £1 million player after this World Cup.

“We look at the [England] squad, five player’s first-time caps. One thing for sure is there are plenty of players going to be doing something they have never done before. It will be the proudest moment of their rugby league life.”

Speaking more specifically about England and their chances, Harrison believes Shaun Wane’s biggest task will be managing his squad and keeping everyone happy.

He added: “Shaun Wane’s biggest challenge will be to keep 24 players happy and motivated. If they play five or six games in this World Cup, they will get injuries, so the squad will be absolutely needed to be anywhere near semi-finals and final.

“You’ll have a lad who’s had three weeks not playing, so the players have got to be mentally strong. Shaun and his staff have got that challenge.”
