Featherstone Rovers captain Danny Addy has expressed his disappointment after the club were denied a spot in this year’s Championship.
The decision means Addy’s time at Featherstone has come to an end with the 34-year-old former Hull KR, Salford Red Devils and Leigh Leopards man now without a club. Addy was one of 10 Featherstone players left in limbo while he waited for news on whether the club could be allowed to compete in 2026.
The West Yorkshire club entered administration last month due to insurmountable debts and that plunged their Championship status into doubt. Since then one interested party has emerged in a bid to try and take the club on into the new season.
But, with just over a week to go until the opening round of the campaign, the decision was made to reject Featherstone’ membership submission. The RFL outlined the the ownership of the club did not meet the required criteria and therefore, the governing body could not give them the green light to play in the Championship.
What the future means for Featherstone right now then is uncertain, but the RFL have confirmed they are committed to supporting the sustainable return of professional rugby league in the town moving forward.
Following the confirmation of the news on Friday evening, Addy took to social media to give his take and express hope that the club can bounce back and rebuild in the not too distant future.
“Absolutely gutted that my time Featherstone Rovers has come to an end,” the Featherstone skipper wrote. “Not in the way that anyone would have wanted.
“Apart from the last few months which have been well documented, I have enjoyed every minute at Fev and it’s been an absolute honour to captain this great club. Such a sad day for the players, staff, fans and community.
“I honestly hope that one day Fev will be back with a bang and wish everyone nothing but the best and hope they can come back and rebuild. Thank you.”
