Abbas Miski update as Wigan Warriors’ Matt Peet explains absence

Matt Peet has confirmed that Abbas Miski should be in contention to feature in Wigan Warriors’ round two clash with Hull FC. Miski was included in Wigan’s 21-man squad for their opening fixture of the Super League season against Leigh Leopards on Thursday night.

However, he was left out of the line-up on the day with Zach Eckersley featuring on the left edge for the Warriors. It was a selection that suggested Miski wasn’t quite ready to start round one after spending much of pre-season recovering from surgery.

The winger went under the knife in the aftermath of October’s Grand Final and returned to training later than the rest of the squad. As such, he didn’t feature in either of the club’s pre-season games against Oldham and Leeds Rhinos and he didn’t travel to Sheffield Eagles for the club’s Challenge Cup third round tie.

Peet had hoped to be able to welcome him back into his line-up in time for round one but the head coach has revealed the clash came a little too soon for him.

“He could have played tonight at a push,” Peet said after the game, per the club website. “We decided to back Zach who I thought he was excellent. Abbas is in the mix.”

The season opener didn’t go as planned for Wigan with the Cherry and Whites failing to register a point over the 80 minutes before Gareth O’Brien’s drop goal sailed through the posts in golden point extra time. It was an enthralling, tight and quality affair at the Brick Community Stadium, but ultimately Wigan Warriors will be hoping for a better performance when they go to Hull next Friday.

Miski looks set be in the running to feature at the MKM Stadium, but Ethan Havard and Brad O’Neill are both ruled out through injury. Havard suffered a hamstring injury on the eve of the season, while O’Neill is still pushing to return from the knee injury he suffered in July.
