“A hand grenade” – NRL star opens up on potential huge Super League switch

Chad Townsend passes the ball.

NRL halfback Chad Townsend was being shopped around to Super League clubs according to the Daily Telegraph’s Phil Rothfield with the likes of Leeds Rhinos and Wigan Warriors likely interested.

This came as the Cowboys are set to move for Leeds Rhinos target Luke Brooks who eventually signed for Manly Sea Eagles.

“I think it was a statement recruitment decision that they’re never going to overpay a footballer again and they won’t budge off $550,000 for Brooks and I applaud them for that,” Rothfield said on NRL 360.

“The mail I have is that Luke Brooks is very likely to finish up at the North Queensland Cowboys, he played Holden Cup in a premiership winning side with Todd Payten a while back, they’re very, very tight.

“There’s a lot of mail now that Chad Townsend is being shopped around to English Super League clubs and a couple of NRL clubs in Sydney as well.”

With Leeds missing out on Brooks, Townsend would have made an excellent signing.

The halfback was part of the Cronulla side who finally won the Grand Final in 2016.

He helped the Cowboys to a strong season in 2022 but they are struggling in 2023.

Thus, a move to Super League for 32-year-old is really on the cards.

Wigan Warriors could also be a smart destination with Cade Cust out of contract.

However, Townsend has now hit out at Rothfield’s comments calling them a “hand grenade.”

“It’s a little bit frustrating when you can see a journalist throw a hand grenade on a news program in prime time and create a bit of a mess,” Townsend told News Corp.

“My future is here in North Queensland. I’m contracted here at the moment and next season.

“I’m very happy. My family is very settled.

“It’s a hand grenade, it means nothing and I don’t really want to talk about it again to be honest.”
